3 Acoustic Rules for French Horn Intonation

Due to its 3.7-meter conical brass tubing, French horn pitch fluctuates heavily with air temperature and hand depth.

1. Thermal Pitch Drift (+5 Cents / 5°C)

French horn has 3.7m of brass tubing. When cold, it naturally speaks 15-20 cents flat. Always warm up with warm breath for 3 minutes before fine-tuning.

2. Right Hand Bell Insertion Depth

Your right hand is part of the acoustic taper. Inserting deeper lowers overall pitch by 10-25 cents, while opening the bell raises it.

3. F vs B♭ Tube Tuning Slides

Tune the main tuning slide first on F open notes (C4/G4), then adjust the separate B♭ tuning slide on B♭ open notes (D4/F4).
